Who is Truly Coaching You?
Jun 16, 2025
I had the honor of working for United Way of Dane County in Madison, WI. As a matter of fact, I have spent the majority of my early career in the non-profit world. Some may even say my current business is not-for-profit (lol-see what I did there!).
There recently was a 25-year reunion of the United Way building, a major fundraising effort. I was on the team then and helped to lead the campaign.
But this isn't about non-profit fund-raising strategy, although I've taught that. It's about the person who sat in the top chair, so to speak.
The President of the organization understood leadership. One of her lessons that often comes to mind, and I share in my keynote speaking and workshops, is very important and significant regarding inclusion.
When I was promoted in the organization to Vice President, I narrowed down my replacement to two individuals.
One of them was a mirror image of me, even to the point of being a fan of the sport of basketball like me.
The other was a single Mother, Hispanic, strong, and very well connected in her community and the city.
The important lesson here is that my boss coached me through the decision, she didn't direct me on who to hire. She coached me by asking questions. She never told me who to hire, but questioned me in a positive way to think through all of my options and, more importantly, opportunities.
I learned through this situation that differences make us better. While initially I was leaning toward my mirror image, I ended up hiring Dora.
Reflecting back on the moment, I'm certain that I saw her as competition. I was afraid. What I learned was that she was exceptionally complimentary to me, our team, and the organization.
She brought great insights to our team and elevated our priorities, goals, and accomplishments. She is now a good and trusted friend.
Neither the President nor Dora were at the reunion, which would have made it perfect, but both of them have impacted my calling as a leader. One of many great reminders from my time there!
Who are the leaders that have impacted your trajectory?
Have a great day!!!!
